Lesbians and Double-Ds go hand-in-hand

Halfwild brings you the lowdown on 2009's epic dramas...

Lesbians and Double-Ds go hand-in-hand.

I'm not talking about mammaries or cup sizes, but dyke drama.
Some go to great lengths to create them, others try their best to stay out of them.
But put a group of women together, add a whiff of a scandal, and watch trouble brew.
Television broken? Head down to Play on Thursdays for your weekly dose of DDs. Cat fights, jealous fits and drunken debauchery awaits. But play nice, and no hair-pulling, ladies.

2009 has been a year of epic drama proportions.
Friendships were made and friendships were broken. Some hearts bled, others opened. You might have found love in the most unexpected places, or you might have spent the year trying to get over her and failing to forget the scent of her hair.

April saw an empowering battle for women's rights during the Aware saga. 3,000 women turned up at the Association of Women for Action And Research's EOGM to wrestle back power from an alleged coup by a group of Christian fundamentalists. After hours of rousing speeches, a motion of-no-confidence was passed with over 700 votes and Lau's committee resigned.

The next month, grrls clad in varying degrees of blush arrived in droves at the nation's first Pink Dot picnic in Hong Lim Park. 2,500 happy people swayed to the harmonies of John Lennon's All We Need Is Love in the peaceful event which received much attention from local and international press. The freedom to love is a human right no one can deny another of.

F1 this year was lit ablaze by the presence of celesbian couple DJ Samantha Ronson and her girlfriend Lindsay Lohan, who were spotted lounging at the Fuel Party at the National Museum. Lesbian icons The Indigo Girls serenaded at the Esplanade.

There were also tragedies that befell the community. The sudden passing of 18-year-old Bianca was sobering news to all.
The injustices done to lesbians in South Africa, who are subjected to “corrective rape” and the brutal silencing of gay and straight women in politics, religion, war and the family all around the world reminds us that there is still so much to stand for.

How has your year been?
December's always seemed to be the most potentially flammable month of the year. Too much time spent in close proximity with stuffy extended family members, memories of your ex from last Christmas, topped off with festival angst towards smugly-in-love couples. Others will find themselves suddenly in relationships which might spontaneously combust a week after.

But have faith, my dear pussy-lovin' friends, you never know what the new year will bring. Cheers to one as dynamic as this one.

About Halfwild
An acid-tongued hedonist who occasionally trips on reality, this former journalist has an unexplainable devotion to the arts. Doggedly, she pursued her love for performance and graduated from the University of Bristol with a first class in Drama: Theatre, Film and Television.

She also has weird habits like cussing in French, finishing off boxes of cherry tomatoes and regressing into a four year old when drunk.
