Interview with DJ Sveta

Can’t head to Mardi Gras this year? Heck, Twoqueens is bringing the party to you.

Fresh from the decks of Mardi Gras, top Aussie DJ Sveta Gilerman will spin her electrifying blend of electro, rock and house at this year’s White Party, happening Apr 2 at Azzura, Sentosa.

As crazily passionate about her music and the arts as championing for gay rights, DJ Sveta is a known name in local and international DJ circles.

She’s played alongside DJs like John Digweed, Chicks On Speed and Victor Calderone. Her music has brought her to places like New York, Paris, Tokyo as well as all over Australia. It’s a wonder how the prolific DJ, who started spinning about 13 years ago, also juggles a day job as an arts marketer for the Sydney Opera House.

“This year’s Mardi Gras was one of the best!” enthuses Sveta, who is a regular performer at the annual Mardi Gras party. “I got to see George Michael perform with Australia’s sexiest Drag King, Rocco D’Amore, Kelly Clarkson, Amanda Lepore and some of Australia’s and the world’s best DJ’s.”

Born in Russia, Sveta moved to Australia when she was 8 years old with her family, who were refugees. Although they were poor, Sveta says she is grateful for comforts like healthcare and a roof over their heads.

“My childhood was marked by leaving the USSR and adjusting to a new country, new language and a new culture. Like many other children that experience more than one cultural context, I am a mixture of cultures.

“I think this experience has helped me have a different view about the world. I am not afraid of difference because of my childhood and I am incredibly appreciative of my life, my freedom of choice and the opportunity to be who I am. I was bullied quite a bit growing up. But I think in the long term, it made me stronger,” recalls Sveta, who is now in her 30s.

That fighting spirit never left her. A long time campaigner for gay rights, Sveta often spins at fundraisers for charities and is not afraid to speak her mind about political and social issues.

“I believe that not speaking up about injustice when you see it around you makes you complicit in the inequality we see around us. I believe in a world that celebrates diversity, from gender to culture through to sexuality. I’m concerned that couples should have equal rights in the eyes of the law,” she says. Her partner of more than four years, Siri May, works at queer health organisation, ACON.

The edgy DJ, with a ready smile, started DJ-ing for radio while at university. Her groovy tunes were picked up by club promoters who offered her gigs at clubs. The offers have been streaming in ever since.

This will be her first trip to Singapore, which she says she is “really excited about.”

”Good music is what truly makes me happy and being able to share good music with an audience who also love it is the biggest natural high. I love making people dance. I get withdrawals if I don’t DJ for more than a few days at a time,” says Sveta.

Even though she is happily and firmly attached, there is no harm in asking sexy DJ Sveta about what she admires in a woman.

“I like intelligence, strength & humour and natural beauty. I don’t have any kind of preference or a ‘type’ for the women that I’ve been attracted to, but they have all been women that I have admired for what they bring to the world, whether it’s art, politics or even hairdressing,” says Sveta, with a smile.

Be ready to amp up the girl power with this party DJ who knows how to party hard, and love even harder.
