Interview with Twoface

Club Kids.

One sports a kooky auburn bob, and the other wears puffy black tutus paired with tons of eye glitter. You can’t quite miss DJ duet Linda Hao, 20, and Grace Su, 19, when they’re out and about in the club kid scene.

Going by the moniker of Twoface, the duet have been making waves in the local scene with their quirky get-ups and indie beats. Since they started Dj-ing a year ago, they have got crowds raving at places like Home Club, Zirca and Butter Factory.

Ladies are in luck. The duet are spinning their unique brand of electro indie beats at the upcoming White Party held at Azzura, Sentosa, on April 2, alongside acts like DJ Sveta from Sydney.

Meeting them in person, surprisingly, was a much more sedate experience. The hardcore party duo turned out to be sweet and girlish, with a love for eye-popping fashion and exude a charmingly shy confidence.

“We don’t dress like this all time,” says Grace, who is studying accountancy at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. “You should see us when we’re walking around our neighbourhood. We look so auntie, you would not recognise us.”

It’s hard to imagine the two as fuddy-duddy aunties when they probably can pull anything off. For their DJ debut at Home Club, they vamped it up in tutu skirts and leopard print body suits with big bows on their heads.

“We are quite sought after for our crazy sense of dressing, which is very pop art inspired,” says Linda, who is a fashion student at Temasek Polytechnic.

The two friends met about four years ago in school, and have been firm friends ever since. They connected not just on their love for music and fashion, but also found solace in that they both moved to Singapore at a young age.

Linda, a Shanghainese, moved here when she was seven years old. Grace, who is originally from Myanmar, has lived here since she was about twelve years old.

“We don’t treat DJ-ing as work,” says Linda. “We think of it as partying with friends.”

And the duo sure knows how to party. In fact, they started DJ-ing because of a drunk conversation one night outside Home Club, where they frequent.

Grace recalls: “The owner of the club asked if we were interested in DJ-ing, and we said, why not. And it all began from there.”

During a set, the duo, who cite groups like The Ting Tings as inspiration, will take turns to mix in the songs, relying on the easy chemistry they have.

So do the two – who complete each other’s sentences – ever get mistaken as a couple?

“It’s happened once or twice,” says Linda, with a laugh. “I guess we are quite close, we sometimes get mistaken for a couple. But we are quite open about it and laugh it off. “

But you never know what might happen in the future...

“Nah, we are just best friends,” says Linda.
